What this helps with

  • Doing deep work consistently instead of reacting all day
  • Designing your environment for focus
  • Choosing the right tools (and stopping tool-hopping)
  • Building a morning routine that works
  • Handling interruptions and context-switching

Step-by-step plan

  1. 1

    Identify your peak hours

Most people do their best creative and analytical work in the first 2–4 hours after waking. Track your energy levels for 1 week. Schedule deep work during peak hours, admin during low hours.

  2. 2

    Design a startup ritual

A short sequence that signals "work begins": make coffee, review today's top 3 tasks, open only work-relevant apps, put phone in another room. 5–10 min total.

  3. 3

    Set up your environment

Dedicated workspace if possible. Headphones or earplugs. Use a site blocker (Freedom, Cold Turkey) during focus blocks. Clean desk — only what you need for the current task.

  4. 4

    Time-block your day

Block 2-hour focus sessions in the calendar. Use Pomodoro (25/5) or longer blocks (90 min). Don't schedule meetings during your peak hours. Batch email to 2× per day.

  5. 5

    Shutdown ritual

End each workday with: review what you did, update tomorrow's tasks, close all tabs, write one sentence about tomorrow's most important task. Say "shutdown complete" out loud.
